THE ONE AND THE MANY

By Dr. A. NARASINGA RAO

(Madras Institute of Technology)

Dig down,

Deep down,

And further down

Into the springs of things.

They slowly fade,

Into a common shade

At the heart of things;

And lose their enmity,

Attain peace and unity,

Even unto identity!

And this one reality,

Science calls Electricity,

And religion calls it Deity.

Climb up,

High up,

And further up

On the wings of things.

Here is tender creation,

Colour, joy and animation,

Continuous differentiation,

And endless variation

At the edge of things.

Science calls it evolution,

And religion brands it illusion.

The conquering shoot and the flaming fruit

Dare they deny the silent root

And the grey earth that gave them birth

When the drunken wind doth persecute?

Vain the root that dreams no fruit,

Vain the fruit that trails no root.

Vain the seer that doth not hear

The cry for help, the voice of fear.

Passion-tossed, fear-engrossed,

What heavy cost paid they who lost

Through disuse past, those cool and vast,

Havens of the hidden self.

There is’nt any

Sense, my son,

Fleeing from the Many

To seek the One.

They pretend they are two,

And laugh behind you,

If you take them true!
