GOD
AND MAY
JAYANT V. JOSHI
Senior Lecturer in English,
When a sweet breeze relieves me from scorching heat,
When merry notes of the nightingale excel the musician’s art,
When by twinkling stars the dark wood is lit,
When the chirps of
the Cuckoo soothe my gloomy heart
When gentle drops of rain spread the carpet of greenery
When the roses fill the polluted air with fragrance,
When the rays of the morning sun glow the scenery,
O God, I find the working of thy graceful hand at once,
When poverty becomes a curse and money rules the world.
When beauty of Eve is sold at the market,
When the blackout of war makes the world dark,
When the sacred earth is stained by blood,
When the innocent fish struggle for
life in a basket.
O Man, I find thy tyrannical hand at work.
