O
immortality, your children, too,
alas,
are mortal; even so is their
mortality
a child of yours!...O you
master
playwright, you conquered the despair
of
life; so might you conquer the malaise
of
death. But oh, to think that you no longer
teach
us, no longer write, on longer raise
your
voice of wisdom–wisdom that was stronger
than
all the world’s philosophies–this breaks
our
hearts. And yet, your deathless spirit makes
us
trust that there where you lie buried, or
there
where you dwell in starry heavens, you may
still
reign o’er human thought and shine like star
and
sun and moon in an eternal way!
