DHARMA CHAKRA

By M. KALIDASU

(Advocate, Bapatla)

Tell me the meaning, mother mine,

Of the wheel, which stands as Dharma’s sign.

Look at the centre of it, son:

There, when creation was begun,

Dharma was fixed as axle firm

For the World to turn till Time’s full term.

What are the spokes, where do they go?

What do the blank intervals show?

Dharma’s manifold paths are they,

By which the wise maintain their way.

The gaps are the gulfs wherein we drop

When we abandon Dharma’s prop,

To flounder there till we have found

The next spoke as it sweeps around.

Of the tracks, though diverse-seeming, each

The same circumference will reach,

Which is mankind’s collective soul–

Redeemed–our evolution’s Goal.
