To Sudha

BY YESHWANT

(Translated from Marathi by R. K. Dravid)

Look, darling, look thus bending out of the door!

This half-glimpse of thine does captivate my heart!

Methinks, it is the blushing twilight that flushes on the horizon,

Or the charming bud that dances under the leaf,

Or the thrill of joy that springs up from the heart,

Or the sweet anxiety that lurks behind the thrill,

Or the tune, half-sung, that floats from out the grove,

Or the rainbow that makes its momentary appearance!

The sweetness of all these various beauties

Has in some wise its impress on thy actions

Do hold thy finger softly ’gainst thy lips,

And cast askance thy stealthy glance at me!

Whenever I come to thy abode in my blues,

Pray brighten me, my darling, with these beguilements!
