Love and Death

BY SRIMATHI NILIMA DEVI

Didst thou come in my doleful dreams

To light my darkest nights?

Or didst thou shine on my stillest dawns

To fill my days with sweet delights?

What songs didst thou sing?

What music didst thou wring from my heart?

The lilt of, thy music–the cadence of thy songs

Eternally reverberates–all life unto death!

Beloved, if thou dost care,

Open the door of my heart–

There thou wilt find

A shrine on its altar–

Thy image divine!

–At its feet burns a lamp

–Bright with my undying love.

Dearest one, when I die,

Dust will turn to dust:

But my soul shall wing its flight to the limitless,

Carrying thy image for ever in each life of mine!
