How Many Others!
BY VELLIVEETIAR
(Translated by P. N. Appuswami from the original poem in Tamil)
[A girl has eloped with her lover. Her aged nurse seeks her everywhere, but in vain. Footsore and weary, she voices her complaint thus.]
My poor feet totter;
And my eyes are dim with looking, looking!
But, alas!
Those whom I do not seek,
Those others of this world
Outnumber the stars in the spacious sky.
