WHOM AM I RESPONSIBLE TO

V. Srinivas

Prelude: Societies are evolved to look after the common good of its members. Society provides opportunities to its members to work for the common good. People take up various professions based on their interest, knowledge, skills and goals and serve the fellow members. By doing so they derive their livelihood, satisfaction and live meaningfully.

Problems of the Present Day: Most of the individuals take up jobs and professions by choice or chance. Some people try to meet expectations of the society and deliver quality goods and services selflessly and impartially. Majority of the people do not meet the expectations of society. They are interested in their personal gains and accumulate massive wealth by wrong means. This tendency is leading to many problems in the society. It is high time to check this menace. This kind of corruptive nature is not found in any other creature. Man who has the capacity to differentiate the good from the bad is resorting to unfair means by troubling and deceiving many of his fellow men. In this context let us try to refer to the functioning of the universe.

The universe is governed by natural laws. These laws regulate the functioning of living and non-living things in the universe. The rotation, the revolution of the earth and other extra terrestrial bodies, the functioning of rocks, trees, atmosphere, water bodies, animals, birds, insects and other microorganisms are self propelled and governed by the natural laws. They all function without any kind of external supervision. There is an inherent and inbuilt mechanism, which was stipulated by the divine conscience in all the elements of nature. This mechanism is taking care of the sustenance and maintenance of and expansion of the universe from time immemorial. This is ever lasting, ever developing and paving the way for the creation of new life in the evolutionary process.

But man’s behavior is against the natural laws and the divine conscience. Majority of the people are acting according to their selfish will, which was enveloped by the ‘maya’ of ignorance. The natural laws and divine order are deviated by man. This is evident from the deteriorating conditions of the natural mechanisms of the universe and the physical and social health of the people. Hundreds of the species of the living organisms have already vanished and many other species are endangered due to the irrational, selfish, and exploitative behavior of a single creature i.e. man. Where as the so-called irrational creatures are maintaining the natural mechanisms without disturbing the ecological balance.

The time has come to question the claim that ‘human beings are rational beings’. Their behavior is against natural mechanisms and natural laws. Their behavior is against the divine nature that is inherent in the universe. The consequences of the irresponsible, irrational behavior is endangering the life of the other species as also of human beings. Their irresponsible behavior is making man’s life miserable in the form of tensions, stress, unrest, agony, diseases, conflicts, calamities and wars. Perhaps, this may be the corrective mechanism of nature that is trying to make man realize his fallacious behavior and stop it.

Remedy

The only solution to the problem of the present day is that, every man and woman has to live and work according to the divine laws that govern the universe. They have to be responsible to the divine entity that is inherent in them. They should opt out to the path of being responsible and accountable to their divine conscience present in them and work selflessly, impartially to their fullest potential. This is more respectful, reverential. This gives true satisfaction than any other wealth gives.

Epilogue

India is the repository of the saints, rishis, great scholars, great emperors and great statesmen. They have influenced the people and the societies through the millenniums by their exemplary life. The man of today has forgotten them and their exemplary life. Today’s man is in the shackles of the materialistic life. He/she has totally mistaken the misery as happiness. This is leading to unrest, agony and tribulation in the day-today life. By the time he/she realizes this, it is too late to correct him/herself. Only a few are fortunate to realize this well in advance by virtue of their knowledge and wisdom. They are following the divine order and serving their fellow human beings selflessly, impartially deriving true happiness.
