The Two Women

Ravi Thakur

I call one ‘Amma’

The other ‘Devi’

The two women

Who matter the most in my life.

One has brought me

Into this amazing world

Conditioned my sensibilities

Pardoned all my follies and pranks

And wished

I be - the happiest and prosperous man ever

Another - bore with me

Tolerated all my excesses

Supported me in every crisis

Boosted my ego

Held me in high esteem

Projected me as superior

All very intentional

And by a definite plan

Both the women -

The tap roots

Of the gaint tree called

The Indian Family

The embodiments

Of the Divine mother

The tall icons

Of the Great Indian Tradition
