THE PEOPLE

P. SINGAYEVSKY

Above all we are taught to trust the people,

They say, if there is no burden (in flight),

You knock at any door

Your friends help there.

We knock and even if

They do not open to us everywhere,

Our souls do not grow stale,

Do not get hardened

And we do not surrender to misery.

We trust

And we trust all alike

That it will be

As we decide.

As we hasten to a new unknown town,

As we hurry to an appointment.
