Broken Shards

Chandra Dorai

A piece of green glass on the grass,

glittered in the sunlight.

The other bits of glass were swept away.

Not only was glass broken,

Broken were rules of cricket,

Broken was concern for a human being,

Broken was hospitality to a visiting country,

Broken was the sportive spirit,

Broken were values

Broken was the veneer of civilization

to reveal brutal primal instincts,

What the eye saw

was only a broken piece of glass,

not a heart that was broken

at everything else that lay shattered

on the grass.

The only thing

that remains unbroken

is Hope.
