A PRAYER ANSWERED

Prof. P. P. SHARMA

Glory enough, I thought,

to have glimpsed

from afar

the ochre robe

undulate

reveal

a profile

for it led on to

a fuller view:

the beatific smile

the serene eye

the compassion

encompassing all

the healing that emanates

from His sheer presence.

A wavering mind

not yet anchored in faith

wanting to lay itself

in unquestioning reverence

at His feet

yet not knowing

how to do it

being tossed

like a fragile leaf

by wayward gusts

suddenly set at rest

as the wave of His hand

in answer to his prayer

wrong from the air

a pinch of sweet-smelling Vibhuti

but give it to one

who perhaps deserved it better.

This is how the prayer

secretly and anonymously made

was answered

and faith all too tenuous

made whole and strengthened.
